Program Pathways

Many patients come to us convinced they need/want surgery. In every case, we carefully evaluate each person and recommend a pathway that will be best for them. In general, patients follow one of two paths: medical or surgical. There is a lot of overlap and the processes are quite parallel.

Please feel free to ask questions at any time.

As is common to all weight loss efforts, treatment through the Obesity Consultation Center is centered around modifying dietary energy intake and increasing energy expenditure. The first  course of action is to have patients intensively monitor patterns of intake and expenditure. When the lifestyle factors that promote being overweight are identified, a course of treatment is recommended.

Sometimes individuals respond well to basic dietary and activity changes. For others, additional strategies may be added to help achieve basic weight loss goals. These adjunctive therapies include:

  1. A medically supervised weight loss program, which may include options such as:
    • a balanced, reduced calorie diet
    • a very low calorie formula diet
    • medications to control appetite or reduce fat absorption
  2. Minimally invasive (laparoscopic) gastric bypass surgery or a newer, even less invasive surgery, the ‘Lap-Band’ surgery.

Both programs have in common the involvement of our team of weight-loss professionals. We offer both individual and group interactions, specific nutrition plans, close medical monitoring and follow-up support for as long as you need it.

The Obesity Consultation Center team determines indications and eligibility for all specific interventions on a case-by-case basis.
